Good morning, everybody. I hope that you are having a good a good winter break. I had a little snafu this morning and Jack was having a wound clinic visit and it just it carried over. So we’re zooming from the car at the moment, but I’m not driving, so don’t worry about that. You know, it’s just the normal, hectic Christmas season.
And I hope that, like, this is a chance for us to, like, slow down and try to embrace what God is doing through the season of Advent. So we’re going to begin with a Christmas hymn that everybody knows, and hopefully that will help us direct our hearts and kind of get ready before Dr. Floyd shares a word with us this morning.
We’re going to take a minute and just reflect on that.

Thank you so much for reading and just filling in for this moment. We are so excited to have Dr. Floyd speak to us today. He is an expert in all things, especially in crisis. He’s the author of a crisis counseling book, which I know even outside of counseling. I have heard people refer to his book and talk about what what a great thing he has done for the body of Christ.
And so we are so thankful, obviously, to one of our senior fellows. I don’t really have to introduce him because everybody knows Dr. Floyd and it’s truly an honor to to listen this morning. So, Dr. Floyd, you have the floor. Okay.

Thank you so much, Erin. Can anybody hear me okay? Okay. Good to be here with you. DAY It’s always interesting to be chosen for the December devotional because you get the chance to do it about Christmas.
But then it’s a story that that all of us have heard so much so. But I am still grateful because I do love the story and of of God. Coming to live with us is such an amazing story. And we do know a lot about Jesus birth from Matthew and Luke. Of course, we have two different accounts that give us components of the story and we can put those together and have some ideas about what happened leading up to Jesus being born and then the events right after.
And while we have the authors of these two books that give us details about his birth, like so many other narrative accounts in Scripture, the narrative accounts can be amazingly, amazingly understated at times. Maybe my favorite understated scripture passage in the Bible is when Jacob wakes up after having the switcheroo in his marriage and it says, Behold, it was Leah.
That’s just about as understated as you can, as you can get the narrative accounts or understated in some ways like that. We have some information, but we don’t have all the information. And in these narrative passages, there seems to be places where a lot happens between verses or behind the verse. We have the verse, we have a couple of things, but there’s still a lot that’s behind it.
And so we’re going to we’re going to see if we can look, I’m going to point out three passages in the narrative. The counties seem to be amazingly understated and look at those today. So if you do have your Bible with, you might keep it open to that. Luke One, two and Matthew one. And and look, in some of these places yourself as we talk about them, the first one that I’ll mention, understated example number one is Mary and Elizabeth and specifically this would be in Luke chapter one between verses 55 and 56, verse 55 ends that Magnificat, Magnificat, Mary’s Mary’s Song of praise and verse 56 tells us she stayed three months in the
Hill country of of Judea with Elizabeth and Zachariah and then returns home. But we don’t know what happened in those three months. We don’t know exactly what took place in those three months. We do know some things leading up to this. We know that Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth, a small Galilean village, small town. Any of you that grew up in small towns or spent time living in small town know a bit about small town life and what it’s like.
And this was a small town and probably had two, you know, and it was such a small town. They’re jokes about it in the New Testament. Nazareth. Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? They’re jokes about it was such a small town, so small town life we know that they were engaged. And so in Hebrew custom, we know this was about a year long period of time between betrothal, which would be most likely ratification of of an agreement that the parents had made earlier.
And it would be like our engagement and it would last about a year. Then it would end in about a week long celebration where the marriage, marriage, the whole community celebrated together and celebrated this young couple that that they all knew. So again, if you grew up or if you had a wedding in a small town, you know what that’s like the one town marquee has congratulations and your name on it.
Everybody’s invited. You don’t even have to send out the invitations. It’s obvious everybody’s invited and everybody has a circled on the calendar and they’re looking forward to it. And likely it was something of that nature that this couple was during that period of time and during that period of time, an angel shows up to Mary one day, calls her favored or Blessed, tells her that she is going to be the mother of the Messiah.
And kind of we have that that amazing story in Luke one in this encounter And as they talk about this, the angel actually gives Mary a way that she can confirm this information. The angel tells Mary, your cousin Elizabeth, who is long past childbearing years, is pregnant and expecting, and the angel drops that piece of information in there.
And I think the angel gives Mary that information. So that Mary can have a way of knowing that this is, in fact, something that’s really taken place. You may remember that there are other people who claim to be the mother of the Messiah to be during that time, and none of those proved to be true. So there are times that that it happened around this time and before this time, Mary agrees to be a part of God’s work.
Mary says Let it be, and steps into the stream. The river of God’s work and and and joins. The thing that God is doing. Mary leaves leaves for the hill country of Judea. And it appears that she left fairly quickly. The King James says with haste. The other or the other versions commonly say immediately. And so pretty quickly she got ready and left for the hill country of Judea to see Elizabeth.
And it it does it does bring the question of does she tell her family what’s happening before she goes back. Does she tell Joseph what happened before she goes? We don’t know. The Bible didn’t tell us. It just says she went with haste. I suspect she did. I suspect she went to see if this was true. She got herself together, told her mother she wanted to go see Elizabeth, hadn’t seen her in a while, heads up to the hill country A and and and has an opportunity to to to see what happens based on what the angel said.
We know Mary arrives in the hill country. She sees Elizabeth. Elizabeth expresses incredible joy at encountering the mother of the Messiah, Elizabeth’s baby, John the Baptist. Luke leaps in Elizabeth’s womb, and all of these are gigantic confirmations of this thing, the angel has told Mary. And so she has this this experience with these incredible confirmations. And then the three months, the three months they spend together and when my wife was pregnant, we have four kids.
She is pregnant three times. You have twins. I became aware at a certain point that there is something that pregnant women share with each other that no one else shares. And especially as a guy, I realized there was a clock that I never would be a part of, and my wife could be around another pregnant woman and they would kind of bond together and talk.
And there was something that was shared between them that I could only observe from the outside. I couldn’t observe that from the inside, and I never could. I think those three months are really, really crucial for what was going to come. You have two pregnant ladies and one guy who can’t talk and they’re all hanging out together. And I think the bonding time is just really, really, really crucial for what is is to come and and supportive of Mary, refreshing and rejuvenating and crucial in light of days ahead.
The Bible didn’t tell us a lot about that. And in its understated way, we don’t know. Here’s understated example. Number two and this is Mary as she returns to Nazareth, The Bible doesn’t give us a lot of details. What happens really between verse 56 and Luke two one after verse 56, it jumps to that kind of the account of John’s birth, and we don’t pick up the Mary Joseph story until Luke two.
Once we don’t, we have kind of a gap and we don’t know what what happens, what happens back in Nazareth when Mary comes back after this three months in the Hill country. And this is where the story gets really interesting to me as I said, I don’t think Mary told Joseph or her family what happened before she she left.
Even if she did. No cell phone. She’s gone for three months. They can’t carry on the conversation. They’re just sort of speculation. But I don’t think she told them. I think she’s gone for three months, has this incredible three months and then comes back. I always wonder, did she rehearse during those three months of what she was going to say to Joseph when she first saw him?
Okay. Did Elizabeth coach her in? What to say? Maybe she cooked Joseph a favorite meal. Joseph, sit down. There’s something I want to talk to you about. You see, I was out hanging laundry, and this angel showed up, and his angel called me blessed and favored and said I was going to, you know, How did she say it?
What did she actually say? How did how did she go about saying it? We don’t know. We don’t know exactly what happened. We do know that Joseph doesn’t believe or however she said it, however she shot strung her words together. Joseph didn’t believe what she said. Could Mary tell by Joseph’s eyes that he didn’t believe her? Could she tell in his eyes?
And I think pretty immediately she could tell that this was not going well and that that he didn’t believe or how could you mask that or pretend if you didn’t believe that? I do think that at this point, things seem to take a pretty bad turn in this story for Mary and what was happening. And I don’t imagine at that moment she felt particularly blessed, she tells Joseph.
And we know he doesn’t buy the story. He doesn’t believe her. And the only things I can figure out is Joseph had to think she was either lying or crazy. Those are those are the only two options I can come up with. She was a liar or she was crazy. And whichever one of those he believed, he wrestles with this and comes to the decision, He’s going to break off the engagement.
He’s going to divorce her and sort of the the Hebrew custom. According to Old Testament lore, he could have had her put to death for adultery because surely he believed his country for three months that one of the Hill country guys got her pregnant, that that that he could have had her put to death. And this does lead to the question of why did God put the couple into this position?
Why does God call Mary blessed and allow her to experience what has to be an incredibly painful, emotional struggle? Your fiancee thinks you’re lying, wants to divorce you. Why does God allow Joseph to struggle? How many sleepless nights did Joseph experience? You get the idea from that The Matthew Passage. This was a period of time and that this went on for a period of time.
Why didn’t God tell him both at the same time what was happening there? Other accounts in Scripture where God tells one spouse something before he tells the other. It’s it’s fascinating. It’s fascinating to ponder why. Why does he allow them to know at different times and let them go through this particular struggle? We do know from the Matthew account the angel appears to Joseph and confirms Mary’s story in incredibly and to his credit, Joseph believes the Angel story and he and Mary are now together.
And I think perhaps as a result of this struggle, they’re probably pretty glued together at this point in terms of their connection to each other. There’s some other things we don’t know between 156 and two one who tells Mary’s parents about the pregnancy because Mary told them to. Mary and Joseph together. Tell them Mr. and Mrs. Mary’s mom and dad, we have something we need to tell you.
Mary’s pregnant. This is by the Holy Spirit. It’s not the hill country, guys. It’s not me. It’s. It’s a Holy Spirit. And please believe it. What happens when when they tell the parents and what happens in the family and relationships? What about the wedding? Where does that go? Certainly that kind of comes off the calendar and then it sort of draws everybody’s attention to that day when that was supposed to happen.
What about the other people in the town? What about the guys at the carpentry shop that Joseph has to explain this to and tell this to you what is going on with them? What did they think? What what what did they believe? I suspect, again, in reading the story, just what I suspect I suspect about Joseph now believed her as a result of the angel coming that few others were on their side.
I kind of think it was Mary and Joseph and everybody else, and we don’t know that for sure. Here’s understated example. Number three the couple in Bethlehem, and this jumps to the Luke two passage, and specifically verse seven, and I think this is understated verse number three. And she gave birth to her firstborn son, wrapped in a cloth and laid him in a manger because there is no room for them in the end, man, is that they’re understated and there’s a lot going on there.
And a few of the things we know the time is getting closer for Mary to have the baby. The couple is together, although they haven’t been sexually intimate. And for this particular couple, the social custom of how marriage happens in that day gets turned on its head and just everything is crazy and everything is out of sorts and everything is is out of order.
They have to travel to Bethlehem. Joseph has to travel to Bethlehem, the town of his family’s routes to register and pay taxes. We do know that Bethlehem is about 80 to 90 miles from Nazareth as the crow flies. So we’re talking about, at the very least, an 80 to 90 mile trip, more than like they would have had had traveled to to the Jordan River down and then back over.
So likely they had to travel 120 miles or so, too, to make that particular trip. In our traditions, we have Mary riding on a donkey. Probably didn’t happen, she probably walked with my wife. Was that for a long a pregnancy? Riding in a Honda was hard, much less riding on a donkey. If she did ride on a donkey 80 to 120 miles, somewhere in that range, that that’s that’s a lot.
And that’s a lot to do when you’re not pregnant that that when you’re eight and three quarter months pregnant that that’s tap they have to travel to to Bethlehem. And here’s my big question at this first and tell us and that is why did Joseph take Mary with her in its understated nature? We don’t know why Joseph took Mary with her.
I’ve researched and researched, and I can’t tell that Mary that Mary had had the sign up in Bethlehem. Joseph It was his family. So I can’t tell that Mary had had the sign up. So why not leave? Mary Make a quick trip down. Make a quick quick trip back. Why not do it that way? What I suspect is that Mary was in danger in her community and in danger maybe from the community, maybe in danger from her own family.
And so Joseph took her with him because of that. If that’s not the case, then it’s just the worst example of bad luck that a couple can have your eight and three quarters months pregnant and you have to travel 120 miles so that you can sign a piece of paper to give the Romans your tax dollars. That’s really unfortunate.
Okay. And that’s a really bad set of circumstances. So she was either a danger or this is just really rough set of circumstances that are happening to this couple. The couple arrives in a crowded city and at some point, Mary has her first contraction. What goes through her mind? At that moment, the Bible didn’t tell us in its understated nature, it doesn’t tell us.
And what goes through Joseph’s mind at that moment. Remember, this couple wasn’t sexually intimate. So you’re in a crowded city of strangers that you don’t know. You’re having contractions and you’re with this guy that you haven’t been intimate with. And and think about that for a second. And again, the question is, why would God do this to the couple?
Why would God choose this couple that allowed them to go through things that are difficult, painful, scary and hard? Why would he do that? And then what happens next? What happens next? The baby is born. Shepherds show up pretty immediately and confirm this incredible thing. And so after hard things, there’s this confirmation by the shepherds of what God is doing.
We know at some point the Magi come. I know people think that was two years later because it says they were in a house. I think pretty quickly someone would have moved this couple to a house. So I’m not sure. I think it was two years later whether it was or not. That’s still a confirmation of what God’s doing.
They take the baby to the temple to dedicate them. They meet Simeon and Anna. And again, there’s a confirmation of this thing as God, it’s up to you. So after hard silence, there are these confirmations that, yes, this is the thing that God is up to. And then you remember what happens after that. They get word that Herod is out to kill all the babies and they have to flee to Egypt and what’s the pattern here?
An angel appears. The the angel goes away. Mary gets confirmation. Three months of of of nurture. Hard things begin to happen. Things continue to happen. It doesn’t feel blessed. It feels upside down. I can’t see the way forward. I can’t see what this is supposed to be. Something incredible happens that confirms God’s care. Then maybe another confirmation. But then the next hard thing happens.
That sounds like life doesn’t it? Erin Newton That sounds like life, doesn’t it? And here’s the deal. I think when God chose to come live with us, he he could have chosen any way he wanted to. He could have chosen any way he wanted to. There much more dramatic and Hollywood sound ways of showing that horse over the horizon.
You know, with thunderous hoof beats and a John Williams score chariot with lightning and thunder coming down there, there were much, much better ways to to do it. He could have done it any way he wanted to. And I’m sure Hollywood could come up with a better way for this to happen. But when God chose to come live with us, he came to a poor and frightened couple who were just trying to live lives of faith, impotent Nazareth.
They were just trying to live or is afraid. He came to a family that likely, as a result of his coming, may have ostracized this couple and they may have been on the outs. You remember when they were supposed to come back from Egypt? They weren’t going to Nazareth. They were going to Judea and only went to Nazareth as a last resort.
I think that’s because they were on the outs with everybody. Remember, when Jesus starts his ministry, what happens? That’s that kid from that family. Okay, that’s married. That’s that. Remember that story? That’s Mary and that weird story. And and I think that that they were that family. I think they were ostracized. When Guy came to live with us, he came to a family that for a period of time was likely a single parent family at some point after Jesus was 12, Joseph dies and Mary probably was a single parent.
And so Jesus grew up in that family. So when Hebrews 414 tells us that we have a great high priest who understands our world and the messiness of life, we have confidence that this is true. And we know that this high priest who intercedes for us intercedes at a firsthand knowledge of what it is to be in a family and around people who are scared and in pain and confused.
So Emmanuel, God with us, He joins us in the messiness and chaos of life He walks with this day by day, he intercedes for us even when our prayers don’t have words. And for this Christmas story, I’m grateful.

I will open us up and we’ll probably just do one one break here. It’ll be a little bit longer than we normally do, but I will lead us and then I’ll close this out.
Dear Lord, I thank you for just the fact that you are Emmanuel and not not the the horse rider with the thunderous, you know, sounds coming to us, but the child who had to deal with suffering and pain and knows what that feels like.
So let us take a moment now to pray for the pain, the pains of grief, the pain of suffering, the pain of feeling lonely or unknown or frustrated. Whatever pain there is in our lives, our families lives. We play for the Gresham family, the Davidson family, all of us who are looking at the holidays with an empty seat.
Take a moment and pray for that. Now.
And Lord, we praise you because we know that you hear all things that you hear each of our groaning, You hear our heart when our when we just have no words And you hear our brothers and our sisters pray for each other. And we thank you for coming to us, for being willing and loving and merciful to endure life as a human in a potent little town and just experience things so that you can intercede for us in ways that comfort us because we know you’ve walked this before.
We are so thankful for this Christmas Eve season because it means we are not alone and that redemption has come, which means healing comes. So be with us as we walk these paths, whether they are festive and joyous. And we we are so thankful for those moments or whether they’re a little less bright and a little more heavy.
We thank you for this that’s coming before us. And we know that we are not alone and that we can just endure. We thank you for Carol and the family that we are. I don’t know if many seminaries get to really feel this bonded, but we thank you for what you’ve brought together, what you have knitted together. This community and keep us all safe as we go throughout our days.
And just bless all the work that we’re doing that it would be to your glory. And it’s in your name that I pray. Amen.

Y tenemos esa increíble historia en Lucas uno en este encuentro. Y mientras hablan de esto, el ángel en realidad le da a María una manera de que ella pueda confirmar esta información. Nace el bebe. Los pastores aparecen bastante inmediatamente y confirman esta cosa increíble. Y así, después de las cosas difíciles, hay esta confirmación por parte de los pastores de lo que Dios está haciendo.
Sabemos que en algún momento vienen los Reyes Magos. Sé que la gente piensa que eso fue dos años después porque dice que estaban en una casa. Creo que rápidamente alguien habría trasladado a esta pareja a una casa. Entonces no estoy seguro. Creo que fue dos años después, lo fuera o no. Eso sigue siendo una confirmación de lo que Dios está haciendo.
Llevan al bebé al templo para dedicarlos. Conocen a Simeón y Ana. Y nuevamente, hay una confirmación de esto como Dios, depende de usted. Entonces, después de un duro silencio, hay confirmaciones de que, sí, esto es lo que Dios está haciendo. Y luego recuerdas lo que sucede después de eso. Llegó a una familia que probablemente, como resultado de su llegada, pudo haber excluido a esta pareja y es posible que hayan estado al margen. ¿Recuerdas cuando se suponía que regresarían de Egipto? No iban a Nazaret. Iban a Judea y sólo fueron a Nazaret como último recurso.
Creo que eso se debe a que estaban en desacuerdo con todos. Recuerde, cuando Jesús comienza su ministerio, ¿qué sucede? Ese es ese niño de esa familia. Está bien, eso es casado. Eso es eso. ¿Recuerdas esa historia? Esa es Mary y esa extraña historia. Y creo que ellos eran esa familia. Creo que fueron condenados al ostracismo.
