Working full time as a pastor for First Baptist Church in Waxahachie, we all know him because he’s on Carroll’s board. He was also a Ph.D. student completing his PhD in New Testament here at Carroll.
The distinguished professor of Christian Heritage and Carroll’s Director of PhD program. She has served at Dallas Baptist University in their Ph.D. of leadership studies and has taught worldwide for different seminaries and Baptist universities.

It’s a complete privilege to come together today, and we will have a devotional brought from Dr. Karen Bullock. But first, we will listen to a worship song and kind of prepare our hearts for this. And Jeremy Varnell will then do a scripture reading before we have our devotional.

Good morning, everyone. It is my happy pleasure to read with you the Scripture for today, which is from Matthew six one through six and 16 through 21. So here we go, starting in verse one, Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your father in heaven.
So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets as the hypocrites do in the synagogue than on the streets to be honored by others. Truly, I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that your giving may be in secret.
Then your father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray. Standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly, I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your father, who is unseen.
Then your father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. In verse 16, When you fast do not look somber, as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly, I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast put oil on your head and wash your face so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your father who is unseen, and your father who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Do not store up for yourselves Treasures on earth where mosques and vermin destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven where moths and vermin do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal For where your treasure is There your heart will be also.

Thank you. It is again a joy to have Dr. Bullock with us today. We all know and love her. We know if you’ve never been introduced to her, she is the distinguished professor of Christian Christian heritage. She is the she director here. She has a Ph.D. and an endive from Southwestern Seminary. And while there, she also taught church history.
She was the director of the Ph.D. program. There and the associate dean. She has served many times as a director of Ph.D., serving also at Dallas Baptist University in their Ph.D. of leadership studies and has taught worldwide for different seminaries and Baptist universities. She’s heavily involved in the Baptist World Alliance. So thank you, Dr. Bullock, for coming and talking to us today.
And we look forward to hearing this word that you have for us.

Thank you so much. Good morning, friends. My name is Karen and I’m a sinner saved by grace. And today I am a soul seeking and longing and reaching for peace in our world. How about you? How we long for peace in our day? Natural disasters and war and hunger and violence just fill our screen and our media. The recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria, that’s been catastrophic.
Devastating. Whole communities. 40,000 people gone. I think of the shops that will not open again of empty school desks, of teachers who are no more and for empty places at tables. And in the Ukraine, we know that Russia has killed thousands of men and women and children alike, just as Russian soldiers have died by the thousands, as Ukraine has defended its territory.
And hunger is ever with us from the Central American Dry corridor and Haiti through the Sahel, the Central African Republic, the South Sudan, and then eastwards to the Horn of Africa and Syria and Yemen, all the way to Afghanistan. Conflicts and climate shocks are driving millions of people to the brink of starvation. And here at home, we hear the cries of our neighbors grieving for their children and family who are dying each day, and mass shootings in schools and synagogues and malls, confrontations with legal officials.
The weight of all this pain is complex and it’s completely overwhelming. It can make us feel paralyzed at times. We all know that a single person cannot fix these world’s problems. But we also know that to sit idly is somehow fundamentally wrong. How may we as Christians and we may ask it of ourselves. How may I help to bring peace in this chaos?
I think I just wanted to come this morning and let us put our heads together and kind of whisper some things that we already know that will comfort our hearts today. They all center around these three realities in our Christian walk that we all know about orthodoxy or our right beliefs. The knowing part of what we do as Christians or who we are, the or the path part of who we are that deals with how we approach life and our heart, who we the being part of us, and or the proxy, the well, the result of of our knowing and being which takes expression in our actions.
These are not these are not sequential as if you have to have one down path before you could do another or another. These are three interlocking, synthesizing kind of realities in our lives. Our good God gives us answers to the questions that we are asking and the unrest that is in our soul. When we look across our world first, when we see Christians face a crisis of any kind, we as Christians must unite and lean into our beliefs.
We need to remind ourselves at that moment of what we know to be true. Indeed, right. Theology can guide us into right actions and responses. We have a theology for crises. It starts with trust in the one true God. And one of his primary characteristics is his desire for order. If we look at the Book of Genesis from an ancient Near Eastern perspective, we see that many of God’s creative acts are about bringing order into chaos.
We take a look at the third day of creation, for example, when God said, Let the waters under heaven be gathered to one place and let the dry ground appear. And it was so. And God called the dry ground earth. And he called the collection of the watchers. See us. And God saw that it was good. Genesis one nine through ten in the ancient Near East.
Water was the ultimate symbol of chaos. And in several ancient near Eastern myths, the so-called gods tangle with the waters to show themselves to be superior. But for our God, the Israelites, God, Yahweh. This is an easy task. He merely speaks as does Jesus later on the Sea of Galilee. He rules over these forces of chaos. And later, Adam and Eve are appointed to steward God’s creation.
God instructs them to bring order as He had done. So part of our mandate as his people from the beginning is to believe and to trust in the God who creates order and to and to help to bring order into our world. We are called to know him as peace in this chaos. It’s the knowing part. We know him.
Second, we serve a God who walks with us. This is the cultivation of our heart, the auto path. One of the many jobs that we have as Christians. Even when Adam and Eve set against Yahweh, he is walking in the garden in the cool of the day. He is seeking them out. Genesis three. We know that God doesn’t need a relationship with us, but incomprehensibly He desires one.
And so today we continue the conversation with God through prayer, having Christ as the means of restoring relationship with God. We are in Him and He is in us like a glass full to the brim of water that sits inside a bucket full of water. There is no part of our reality where God is not. So when we see the pain of our world, we we acknowledge, we whisper to each other today that it exists because things are not as they should be.
The order that God desires is not fully present. Everything from natural disasters to warfare to famine, to violence, to sickness can in some way be traced back to things being out of alignment with God’s ultimate will for the world. Because the world is not in right relationship with him. And this is why Paul the Apostle tells us for the eagerly expecting creation, he waits, awaits the revelation of the Sons of God for the creation has been subjected to futility.
Not willingly, but because of the one who who subjected it in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its servility to decay into the glorious freedom of the children of God. Romans 8 19 through 21. Because in Paul’s era, Jews were looking forward to a day when the Messiah would not just reign in Israel, but restore order also to the created world.
They looked forward to a messianic age, and we share this same hope. And the Lord Jesus, knowing that He will return and restore order. So John says in Revelation, Then I saw a new heaven and a new Earth for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away and there was no longer any sea. I saw the holy city, the New Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God prepared as a bride, beautifully dressed for a husband.
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, Look, God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them and they will be his people. And God himself will be with them and be their God. And He will wipe every tear from their eyes and there will be no more deaths or mourning or crying or pain for the old order of things has passed away.
So we must. And it helps us to whisper like the apostles and to pray for a new creation, for our entire world. We must pray as one calm Lord Jesus come while also crying out. Lord Jesus, please stand alongside the hurting of our world and help me to be the person who stands alongside them with you. We are called to pray his peace from the middle of the chaos.
So we are knowing him to be peace in the chaos. And we are praying his peace from the middle of the chaos. And then third, the Gospel of Jesus requires us to take action, right? Action or as a proxy camaraderie in action. We cannot idly watch the state of our world and sit still and called ourselves Christians. This is income incompatible with Jesus’s teachings.
Jesus makes this clear when he says Whoever receives one of the little ones in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives not me, but him. Who sent me? Mark 9:37. The letter James also articulates this idea religion that is pure and undefiled before God. The Father is this to visit orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
James 1:27 Note that James does not speak of right action alone, but also right Spirit being unstained from the world. In essence, he is saying in part that if we love those who hurt, there is little room for idleness that leads to sin like he talks about in James 1:13-15. For James, as for those who bear the image of God.
Genesis 1:27 We are representatives of God’s goodness in a broken and hurting world. Every good and every perfect gift is from above. Coming down from the father of lights in whom there is no variation or shadow of changing of his own will. He brought us forth by the word of truth that we should be the kind of first fruits of his creatures.
James 1 16 through 18. Therefore, as first fruits of God’s labor, let us take action that represents him, that mirrors him in the chaos. We are called to acts of peace. I don’t know what that looks like for you, but in our day to minister to refugees, to grieve with those who grieve, to advance the cause of justice against broken legal systems, to feed, clothe, heal, visit, to share good news in Jesus name.
All of these are acts of peace. Even sitting with someone in the ministry of Presence, just sitting in the silence and letting Christ peace fill the room. Dear brothers and sisters, let us be unified today in our belief, as Carroll, representatives of Christ, we are unified in the belief that God is the God of order. And so let us commit to solidarity in our prayers, to asking him to intercede on behalf of the hurting.
Let us join hands in camaraderie and in our action and in our beings serving the hurting together. Second Chronicles 7:14 gives us a wonderful promise. You know it to get all of us could say it together. If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven.
I will forgive their sins and I will heal their land. And now, may I repeat God’s words to us as we close? May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him so that you may overflow with hope. By the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13. God says to us, Each one.
My peace. I leave with you. My peace. I give you not as the world gives. So do not let your heart be troubled. And do not be afraid. John 14:27 And I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace in this world. You will have trouble. But take heart. I have overcome the world.
John 16:33 And then the wonderful, wonderful blessing for us all today from him. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine on you and be gracious to you. And may the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace. Will you pray with me? Blessed Triune, God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
We long for peace today we have felt the breeze, but not have not known your wind. We have known your trickle son streams, but need your mighty rushing river. We have experienced flickers of your candle, but we pray for your whole and mighty and powerful, consuming fire. We pray that you will breathe your peace into our souls and settle our minds with your truth.
You are the peace that the world needs. The only solution there is. And so open our hearts and senses. Do your leading as you guide us and point the path of peace for us as we walk in the chaos that is our world. And may you find us faithful. Peace weavers as you work your will among us. This we pray in the name of Jesus, the Christ, the holy and powerful Son of the living God, and for His glory alone.

Leaders for the next just a few minutes in a few different prompts. So pray together and just really just take that moment to receive that word and pray for that message of peace and for that call to be peacemakers as we go through these problems. We’re going to begin this morning with praying and praising God for the recent news of the East Texas Baptist University merger.
So we are going to begin with praise. So join me with praising God for that, that you will let the words that Dr. Bullock shared with us today, these words of your truth, just penetrate our heart, that we feel the peace, that God. Every new tragedy that comes into our lives and the news and just personally that Lord, we will trust in you and God when we are able and where we are called.
Let us be that voice of peace and do the work that you have called us to do. Give us courage and give us endurance and perseverance. We thank you for this opportunity to be together today. And I pray that you be with us all. And it’s your precious name that we pray. Amen.

Y hoy soy un alma que busca, anhela y busca la paz en nuestro mundo. ¿Y tú? ¿Cuánto anhelamos la paz en nuestros días? Los desastres naturales, la guerra, el hambre y la violencia simplemente llenan nuestra pantalla y nuestros medios. El reciente terremoto en Turquía y Siria ha sido catastrófico.
Devastador. Comunidades enteras. 40.000 personas se han ido. Pienso en las tiendas que no volverán a abrir, en los pupitres vacíos, en los maestros que ya no están y en los lugares vacíos en las mesas. Y en Ucrania, sabemos que Rusia ha matado a miles de hombres, mujeres y niños por igual, así como los soldados rusos han muerto por miles, mientras Ucrania defendía su territorio.
Y el hambre está siempre con nosotros desde el Corredor Seco Centroamericano y Haití a través del Sahel, la República Centroafricana, Sudán del Sur, y luego hacia el este hasta el Cuerno de África y Siria y Yemen, hasta Afganistán. Los conflictos y las crisis climáticas están llevando a millones de personas al borde de la inanición. El peso de todo este dolor es complejo y completamente abrumador. Puede hacernos sentir paralizados a veces. Todos sabemos que una sola persona no puede solucionar los problemas de este mundo. Pero también sabemos que sentarse de brazos cruzados es algo fundamentalmente incorrecto. ¿Cómo podemos nosotros como cristianos y podemos preguntarnos a nosotros mismos. ¿Cómo puedo ayudar a traer paz en este caos?
Creo que solo quería venir esta mañana y unir nuestras cabezas y susurrar algunas cosas que ya sabemos que consolarán nuestros corazones hoy. Todos ellos se centran en torno a estas tres realidades en nuestro andar cristiano que todos conocemos acerca de la ortodoxia o nuestras creencias correctas. La parte de saber de lo que hacemos como cristianos o quiénes somos, la parte o el camino de quiénes somos que se ocupa de cómo abordamos la vida y nuestro corazón, quiénes somos, el ser parte de nosotros y/o el representante, el bien, el resultado de nuestro saber y ser que toma expresión en nuestras acciones.
Estos no son secuenciales como si tuvieras que tener un camino antes de poder hacer otro u otro. Estos son tres tipos de realidades entrelazadas y sintetizadas en nuestras vidas. Nuestro buen Dios nos da respuestas a las preguntas que nos hacemos ya la inquietud que hay en nuestra alma. Cuando primero miramos a través de nuestro mundo, cuando vemos que los cristianos enfrentan una crisis de cualquier tipo, nosotros, como cristianos, debemos unirnos y apoyarnos en nuestras creencias.
Necesitamos recordarnos en ese momento lo que sabemos que es verdad. Efectivamente, correcto. La teología puede guiarnos hacia acciones y respuestas correctas. Tenemos una teología para las crisis. Comienza con la confianza en el único Dios verdadero. Y una de sus principales características es su deseo de orden. Si miramos el Libro de Génesis desde la perspectiva del antiguo Cercano Oriente, vemos que muchos de los actos creativos de Dios tratan de poner orden en el caos.
Echemos un vistazo al tercer día de la creación, por ejemplo, cuando Dios dijo: Júntense en un solo lugar las aguas que están debajo del cielo, y que aparezca la tierra seca. Y fue así. Y Dios llamó a la tierra seca tierra. Y llamó a la colecta de los vigilantes. Míranos. Y vio Dios que era bueno. Génesis uno nueve a diez en el antiguo Cercano Oriente.
El agua era el último símbolo del caos. Y en varios mitos antiguos del Cercano Oriente, los llamados dioses se enredan con las aguas para mostrarse superiores. Pero para nuestro Dios, los israelitas, Dios, Yahweh. Esta es una tarea fácil. Simplemente habla como lo hace Jesús más tarde en el Mar de Galilea. Él gobierna sobre estas fuerzas del caos. Y más tarde, Adán y Eva son designados para administrar la creación de Dios.

Romanos 8 19 al 21. Porque en la época de Pablo, los judíos esperaban el día en que el Mesías no solo reinaría en Israel, sino que también restauraría el orden en el mundo creado.
Esperaban una era mesiánica y nosotros compartimos esta misma esperanza. Y el Señor Jesús, sabiendo que volverá y restablecerá el orden. Entonces Juan dice en Apocalipsis: Entonces vi un cielo nuevo y una tierra nueva porque el primer cielo y la primera tierra habían pasado y ya no había mar. Vi la ciudad santa, la Nueva Jerusalén descender del cielo de Dios preparada como una novia, bellamente vestida para un esposo.
Y oí una gran voz desde el trono que decía: He aquí la morada de Dios está ahora entre el pueblo, y él morará con ellos y ellos serán su pueblo. Y Dios mismo estará con ellos y será su Dios. Así que comprometámonos a la solidaridad en nuestras oraciones, a pedirle que interceda en favor de los que sufren.
Unamos nuestras manos en camaradería y en nuestra acción y en nuestro ser sirviendo juntos a los que sufren. Segunda de Crónicas 7:14 nos da una maravillosa promesa. Lo sabes para que todos podamos decirlo juntos. Si se humillare mi pueblo, sobre el cual mi nombre es invocado, y oraren, y buscaren mi rostro, y se convirtieren de sus malos caminos, entonces yo oiré desde los cielos.
Perdonaré sus pecados y sanaré su tierra. Y ahora, ¿puedo repetir las palabras de Dios para nosotros mientras cerramos? Que el Dios de la esperanza os llene de todo gozo y paz confiando en Él para que reboséis de esperanza. Por el poder del Espíritu Santo. Romanos 15:13. Dios nos dice, Cada uno.
Mi paz. me voy contigo Mi paz. Yo no os doy como el mundo da. Así que no se turbe vuestro corazón. Y no tengas miedo. Juan 14:27 Y estas cosas os he dicho para que en mí tengáis paz en este mundo. Tendrás problemas. Pero anímate. He vencido al mundo.
Juan 16:33 Y luego la maravillosa, maravillosa bendición para todos nosotros hoy de parte de él. Que el Señor te bendiga y te guarde. Que el Señor haga resplandecer Su rostro sobre ti y tenga de ti misericordia. Y que el Señor vuelva Su rostro hacia ti y te conceda la paz. ¿Orarás conmigo? Bendito Trino, Dios, Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo.
Anhelamos la paz hoy hemos sentido la brisa, pero no hemos conocido tu viento. Hemos conocido tus corrientes de agua corriente, pero necesitamos tu poderoso río caudaloso. Hemos experimentado parpadeos de tu vela, pero oramos por tu fuego total, fuerte y poderoso que consume. Oramos para que respires tu paz en nuestras almas y tranquilices nuestras mentes con tu verdad.
Eres la paz que el mundo necesita. La única solución que hay. Y así abrir nuestros corazones y sentidos. Haz tu liderazgo mientras nos guías y señalas el camino de la paz para nosotros mientras caminamos en el caos que es nuestro mundo. Y que nos encuentres fieles. Tejedores de paz mientras haces tu voluntad entre nosotros. Esto te lo pedimos en el nombre de Jesús, el Cristo, el santo y poderoso Hijo del Dios viviente, y sólo para su gloria.

Líderes para el próximo solo unos minutos en algunas indicaciones diferentes. Así que oren juntos y realmente tomen ese momento para recibir esa palabra y oren por ese mensaje de paz y por ese llamado a ser pacificadores mientras atravesamos estos problemas. Vamos a comenzar esta mañana orando y alabando a Dios por las noticias recientes de la fusión de la Universidad Bautista del Este de Texas.
Así que vamos a comenzar con la alabanza. Únase a mí para alabar a Dios por eso, que permitirá que las palabras que el Dr. Bullock compartió con nosotros hoy, estas palabras de su verdad, penetren en nuestro corazón, que sintamos la paz, que Dios. Cada nueva tragedia que llega a nuestras vidas y las noticias y solo personalmente que Señor, confiaremos en ti y en Dios cuando podamos y donde seamos llamados.
Seamos esa voz de paz y hagamos el trabajo que nos has llamado a hacer. Danos coraje y danos resistencia y perseverancia. Les agradecemos esta oportunidad de estar juntos hoy. Y rezo para que estés con todos nosotros. Y es tu precioso nombre que oramos. Amén.
